the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
— Psalm 121:5,6 (NIV)
We are on a journey to Zion, God’s dwelling place, the seat of his rule, our future home.
We encounter mountains, steep hills laid with slippery slopes and gravelly dirt roads. We face the ever-present elements of our ever-changing environment. But God has made a promise: that which rules the day and that which rules the night shall not harm us. For our Father’s intent is to gather us, his people, out of the temporal — marked and measured by the sun and moon — into the eternal bliss of his light and glory. We are a destined people destined for good.
In today’s scripture we can understand how the sun may harm us, beating down on us, causing dehydration and exhaustion. We can even reason out how the moon may bring fear to people — that it may cause lunacy or make for a lunatic. But can I propose that verse six of this psalm may be alluding to something deeper than the physical attributes or effects of the sun and moon? If we search deeper, we will see what they represent – their significance, their story.
The sun and the moon were created to mark out the now, the temporal, to show us that we are set in time; but they also serve to elevate our eyes to the One beyond time, the Creator of time itself. We are to understand that God, who created the sun, moon, and stars, sits above time and rules over it, and comes to us in gentleness and lowliness to walk with us through our seasons of life. We change; we grow. We revert, we triumph, we fail; but in every season, through every year, even in the daily, God is the proximate sovereign, ruling from his holy habitation.
And not only that, he is at our right hand – near and accessible. He is our covering, our shade, the one who guards us day and night. He is the one who satisfies our thirsty and weary souls. He is the one who keeps us sane when we fear losing sanity. He is our Rescuer and Keeper, our Helper and Strength, the one who delivers us and protects us. If God is for us, who then can be against us?
When these “days of sorrow” end and we look back over our lives, we will see that he was with us always along the way. At our child’s birth, at our wedding, at our spouse’s passing, during that college exam or first date, in the hurt and in the sorrow, both day and night, through every season of our lives — we will see and we will know that the One standing before us was always standing with us. Oh, what a day of glory that will be!

God made two great lights – the greater light to rule over the day and the lesser light to rule over the night. - Genesis 1:16 (NET)
God gave the sun and the moon to mark out seasons, days, and years and to govern the day and the night. They serve the role given them by God and, contrary to pagan thinking, they do not have the power to harm us or help us. Good days and bad days, prosperous years and failing years, seasons of joy and seasons of strain – are all under the kind providence of our God, the loving Creator.
In this scripture passage (v14-19), the sun and moon are not mentioned by name. Why do you think that may be? Does this lessen their role or simply put it into perspective?
How would you define “providence”? Give an example of God’s providence in your life.

Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. - Isaiah 24:23 (ESV)
The Lord rules from Mount Zion, our heavenly destination. Today’s scripture is speaking in end-time language and offers us hope and reason for joy. One day, the sun and the moon will relinquish their rule over the seasons, days, and years to the One who assigned it to them. He will gather us out of the temporal and bring us into the eternal where we will know harm no more and will experience the bliss of safety and comfort under his eternal reign. He is indeed and will surely be a shelter from the storm and shade from the heat.
How often during the day or during the week do your thoughts think on heaven? Are you able to embrace the comfort of our future days with the Lord in heaven?
What are you currently struggling with that makes heaven seem dearer to you? How does eternity without death or mourning or crying or pain make your heart feel?

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? — Romans 8:35 (NASB)
How would you define providence? One good definition might explain it as God’s all-powerful care for us. The God who sees everything is working out everything for our good. Time (as marked out by the sun and moon) itself cannot separate us from his love! The present (the now) nor the future (the then) will not harm us. Not even life or death can separate us from his great love. Why? Because time is a created thing, and our times are in the Creator’s hands — the hands of the One who loves us unceasingly, Jesus Christ.
Who would try to separate you from Jesus’ love? How would you battle this enemy?
How can you apply the truth in this scripture to your life? And why should this truth bring you comfort?

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. — 2 Corinthians 13:14 (ESV)
Grace. Love. Fellowship. We are not alone. The Triune God is at work in our lives; he is near to us on our journey. Each person of the godhead is actively involved in our salvation, bringing it to completion, providing all that we need to walk with him to our home in a worthy manner. He is near to us; he is in us. You are not alone today.
How have you experienced the nearness of God in the fellowship of the Spirit in your life? How could you come to realize and enjoy this more?
How can it be helpful to recall the times you’ve seen or felt the nearness of God in your life? How could you “delight in his grace” today?

The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. - Isaiah 60:19 (NIV)
Our final destination begins where the days of sorrow end and day and night are absorbed into forever. The “not yet” will become the “already now”. All rule will be the Lord’s and time will be a faded concept. The sun will not harm us, nor the moon, for the Lord God, creator of them, will be our light and dwell among us, his people; and we will be with him forever. All future ages will be under his reign. Amen.
What do the sun and the moon point us to? How are they significant in our lives?
Do you have a difficult time grasping heaven as your home? How could you become more comfortable and endeared to your forever home?
